hospital artwork is cool + (some) daily urgings

Image
Dear bots,  I want you to feast your eyes on what I've been admiring lately: hospital artwork. Hospitals are not known for their glamorous collections of local art but, I am recently convinced, our failure to recognize these subtly placed nature scenes is a grave disservice to the art industry. This four-panel watercolor of the Salmon River in Riggins, ID is an excellent example (did not copy the artist's name, shame on me). And since I have no expertise in this matter, I feel it is only appropriate to say that hospitals are excellent art galleries. After conducting some preliminary research on the matter of art at St. Lukes Hospital, I found this article  and this article  on the locally famous installations. Super!   Now, today was Thanks-taking, as Evie Shockley calls it , and also this person who appeared in my Google search. Let us all do each other a favor and contemplate how we can engage in anti-racist and anti-colonial discourse and action on a da...

the ONLY vegan pancake recipe + (some) blubberings

Image
Dear bots,  Congratulations! We made it to Friday! In celebration of our collective triumph, I am sharing a superior vegan pancake recipe. If anyone tells you they have a better vegan pancake recipe they are wrong. I am considering opening a pancake shop in which I serve only vegan pancakes. I am not taking suggestions for names at this time.  Banana Nutmeg Pancakes (Vegan) 2 cups flour  1 TBS baking powder  1 tsp salt  ½ tsp sugar  ¼ tsp nutmeg 1 banana  2 TBS canola oil  1 tsp vanilla 2 cups plant milk  3 TBS vegan butter + 1 tsp cinnamon sugar (for oiling pan) Warm a skillet on medium heat. Whisk together dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Cut the banana into small cubes or mash, whichever you prefer. Add banana and wet ingredients and whisk to combine.  Once combined, mix the butter and cinnamon sugar in a small bowl. Coat a pastry brush in the spread and lightly coat the skillet. Do this before each new batch of pancakes.  Scoop...

Contemplations, birds, + (some) dull chaos

This week I went for a walk. Maybe more than one. I know it was at least two because I took the dog for a walk and then I took the dog and the cat (ie. not Mr. Tibbs) for a walk at the same time. Contemplated the politics of filing for unemployment when I have three jobs that do not pay enough for me to live by myself, but also live with my parents and will not starve or crave a hot shower. Contemplated the size of the cat in relation to her harness. Contemplated the harness itself. Contemplated blue.  I suppose it was at least three walks because I took my dog hiking just the other day. Fell in a puddle. Got mad about the puddle and about the dog who stopped in my path, causing me to fall in the puddle. "Stop," I told her but, of course, I meant "don't stop." Contemplated the politics of trails, of walking on trails, of enjoying these skinny clearings in bloody landscapes that make me hate my ancestors and love the osprey or the red-tailed hawk (I was never goo...
